Meet the Captain: Filippos Adelfoulakos of M/Y NOMAD
Captain Filippos Adelfoulakos is mid-way through his first summer season with NOMAD and has been enjoying the challenges of this new role. We caught up with him to find out how things are going…
“NOMAD has a well-thought-out layout that maximises space and functionality,” begins Filippos, who has now been with the boat for six months. “She’s easy to run, and guests love the spacious cabins, modern amenities, and luxurious comfort. For the crew, she’s a dream to take care of.”
Having had time to get acquainted with the yacht and all she offers, Filippos thinks it’s NOMAD’s outdoor spaces that are her standout feature. “The ample deck spaces are really popular with charter guests,” says Filippos. “There’s the sun deck lounge, dining area, and all the different seating options. The pool and on-deck cinema screen are also firm favourites.”
When it comes to cruising locations, Filippos says the Mediterranean can’t be beaten. “It’s easy to understand why Med-based charters are so sought-after,” says Filippos. “With the stunning coastline, crystal-clear waters, picturesque islands, and vibrant cities – every port is a pleasure in the Med.”
Filippos finds that holding a mutual respect for your fellow crewmates, and always putting professionalism first, are the foundations of building a strong and bonded team, and NOMAD’s onboard dynamic is all about teamwork. “Each member of the team contributes their skills and expertise to ensure the smooth running of the vessel,” says Filippos, and he cites effective communication, cooperation, and collaboration as being absolutely essential. “Everyone has their own responsibilities and duties, and everyone must respect the chain of command, but we are here to help one another, too.”
Filippos prides himself on being able to remain calm under pressure and he strives to lead by example. “The Captain holds a position of authority and responsibility, and I enjoy the sense of leadership that comes with being in command of the vessel. But it’s also important to me that I mentor and guide the younger crew members,” says Filippos.
As a Captain, Filippos naturally enjoys the opportunity to sail the seas and explore new destinations. “There is a freedom and sense of adventure that comes with that, even when it is your job!” exclaims Filippos. Filippos also enjoys meetings new people, sharing knowledge, and building friendships: “It all serves to help create memorable experiences for all those onboard.”
